Explaining Parasitic Gap Restrictions

چکیده

Among the differences between 'real' gaps and parasitic gaps (PGaps) that have been noted in the literature two kinds of asymmetries have received much attention: (i) PGaps, unlike real gaps, are restricted to (certain kinds of) NPs (Cinque 1990, Postal 1993b) and (ii) PGaps, unlike real gaps, do not show Weak Crossover (WCO) effects (Lasnik and Stowell 1991). An implicit assumption of these works is that both asymmetries are properties of the same underlying phenomenon, usually cashed out in terms of properties of the gap itself. There is reasonable factual justification for this assumption, since a number of other WH movement structures including tough constructions and non-restrictive relative clauses show similar effects.

On Category Restrictions in Across-the-Board and Parasitic Domains: Evidence from Russian∗

This paper is concerned with the nature of category restrictions in across-the-board and parasitic gaps. Postal (1993) observes that parasitic gaps in English exhibit category restrictions but across-the-board gaps do not show such restrictions. Munn (2001) indicates that independent differences in the across-the-board and parasitic domains can account for category restrictions in parasitic gap...

Investigating Filler-Gap Dependencies in Chinese Topicalization

The present study explored the on-line process of constructing filler-gap dependencies in Chinese topic structures. In a topic structure, extracting the topic from within a sentence is subject to locality constraints; for instance, gaps inside islands such as adverbial clauses are prohibited. Interestingly, similar to the parasitic gap (PG) construction in English, a gap in an adverbial clause ...

In parasitic-gap constructions an illicit gap inside a syntactic island becomes acceptable in combination with an additional licit gap, a result that has interesting implications for theories of grammar. Such constructions hold even greater interest for the question of the relation between grammatical knowledge and real-time language processing. This article presents results from two experiment...

Syntactic Change in the Parallel Architecture: The Case of Parasitic Gaps.

In Jackendoff's Parallel Architecture, the well-formed expressions of a language are licensed by correspondences between phonology, syntax, and conceptual structure. I show how this architecture can be used to make sense of the existence of parasitic gap constructions. A parasitic gap is one that is rendered acceptable because of the presence of another gap in the same sentence. Compare *a pers...
